“To The Secrets And Knowledge is…” That is how I wanted to start this review. The problem is, it’s hard to describe. Unlike Number One Gun’s earlier work it is not just a straight ahead rock/pop/alternative album. Changing up his approach with this one, writing and recording each track from start to finish individually, Jeff Schneeweis, creates an album layered with texture and depth that defies classification.
The lead single, Forest, is one of the more laid-back tunes on the album and is a good example of the medium ground among the ten songs. At times during the rest of the album he experiments with electronic beats mixed with guitars, ala Muse. Other times he uses vocal percussion as the backbone beat. Schneeweis’ vocal performance shows off more range than before. Forest displays his usual NOG syle, but on more aggressive tracks he sounds like Stephen Christian, from Anberlin. That being said, some of those more aggressive tracks outAnberlin, Anberlin.
Of course, what most will be sure to point out after listening to the album all the way through, is that Schneeweis undoubtedly is either a Journey fan, or watches Glee, or both. Don’t Stop Believing is a good cover song, sounding like a good mix between the Journey and Glee versions, incorporating a bit of both.
On the whole the album was a unexpected surprise. I had never been an avid follower of Number One Gun, but Schneeweis’ hard work and production skills really shine on this one and I am now a fan.
