The new self-titled ep by Rapture Ruckus is unabashedly fun. The New Zealanders have tapped into a sound that walks the line between genius and cheesy with out falling off onto either side.

The album feels like a blend of mainstream hip-hop/pop acts like Kevin Rudolf and The Black Eyed Peas, but that, mixed with Hip-hop flows backed by a full band makes it more diverse than most.

Their lyrics mix party bumpers with inspirational themes, which may sound out of place to an average music lover, but should resonate with Christian audiences.

“Tonight” sounds like it could have been inspired the up-beat Black Eyed Peas song “I Gotta Feelin,” with enough feel-goodness about it to get Eeyore to crack a grin.

“Hold On” brings a big wall of anthem that really completes the sound of the ep encouraging people, “You gotta hold on, help is coming, you gotta hold on, you gonna make it through the rain.”

“All We Got” wraps the ep up with a funkiness I could see doing well on Christian pop radio. With a retro synth, funk guitar, and basic drum beat and aggressive rhymes it’s got a really cool vibe.

All the songs are good with various moods and varying success, I think I would enjoy them more as part of bigger group of songs, but as an ep it feels like more variety is needed to make it feel whole. All that being said if you like any of the aforementioned mainstream artists or Christian acts like Group 1 Crew, KJ-52 or 4th Avenue Jones’ this ep is for you.
