{Tooth And Nail}
Ivoryline has had a lot of radio success in the past with huge songs including “Remind Me I’m Alive,” “Hearts and Minds,” and “Days End.” So you always have to wonder how a band will follow such a hit-ridden-success of a debut.
Vessels is a step up in just about every way possible in my book. It has a bit more of a dance rock style drums, more intricate guitar work, and feel just as emotive as Along Came A Lion, and then some.
Vessels has a more aggressive feel to it even if it doesn’t necessarily sound heavier. The band describes it as having a more indie vibe. I suppose the use of pedals and delays on the guitar add to its indie-ness, but for those of you who see indie as a bad thing, don’t. This isn’t an album that will make you want to relax in an off-the-beaten path coffee shop. This is still good heavy rock.
“Hearts Open” stands out as a way better-than-average praise song. Giving grit and sincerity to what could have easily been just another worship tune. Take notes aspiring praise teams.
“Insticts” represents the album well as a first single, with danceable moments, crashing cymbals and effected guitars.
“Made From Dust” almost has an indie space rock sound to it, and is probably the most artsy song on the album.
“Naked” and “The Greatest Love” are both heavier tracks and show off the bands more aggressive side. And much like Anberlin, don’t ever expect aggression to mean screaming. Jeremy’s vocals always are smooth and high flying over the massive sounds of Wes Hart’s drumming and Dust Kittle’s guitar. So while there is no screaming this should quench the thirst of many a lover of heavy music.
Vessels is everything I would’ve wanted out of Ivoryline on their second studio effort. This album is a great, I look forward to seeing what they do in the future.
