The Almost’s Monster Monster is a great, but hard to define album. It has elements of country, rock, southern rock, classic rock and alternative. It is hard to pinpoint how an album so diverse can manage to avoid feeling scattered, but Aaron Gillespie and company pull it off again with this one. Monster Monster feels bigger with more diversity in instrumentation and range than Southern Weather, probably due to involvement of the entire band on this effort.
The broad spectrum of talent displayed on this disc is truly to be admired, Hands has a cool southern rock style that will make you want to clap along. Hand Grenade, has a slow country feel, enough to make the tightest Wrangler-wearing-boot-scooter two step with his honey. The title track has an almost Foo Fighter/My Chemical Romance feel to it, (weird I know) and some how it all works. Books and Books goes from grunge to pop-rock on a dime, yet it feels seamless. One of the most impressive tracks is the album’s lengthy closer, Monster, (not to be confused with Monster Monster) with enough classical guitar in it to make Clapton, and Satana fans drool it ends the album on a high note.
For all of you who liked Southern Weather or just good music should pick this one up and get your dad to listen too.
Favorite tracks include: Hands, Books and Books, Want To, Get Through, and Monster
